why do Nerd Men that call people fake nerds for enjoying something casually always have a relationship to media that boils down to being able to recite Lists Of Things That Are Nerdy with no deeper sense of theme or context

also ready player one is bad

To be fair, it makes more sense and less cringe in the context of the book. And the main character isn’t toting himself as some super cool, holier-than-thou, dude who looks down on lesser nerds. He has essentially no friends and lives in the dumps. He just has literally nothing else in his life to care about as much as the oasis and the scavenger hunt.

yes but from a meta perspective the context doesn’t really matter, the author himself thinks he needed to list directors and tv shows for 2 pages for the exact reasons people do it in real life + the book and movie both sell themselves less on the story and more on the amount of references they make

we know its not a parody of this mindset because just about everything the author writes carries that exact tone
