ready player one is the ultimate example of how Nerd Culture has become not about celebrating creativity but about blindly consuming media and claiming superiority for it. its not about enjoying things, its about calling yourself a capital f Fan of things because corporations want to sell you more cheap toys and lazy, shallow media to circlejerk around because youve bought into the idea that purchasing enough cash grab merchandise is a good substitute for a personality

I do feel like it’s worth pointing out that Ready Player One is receiving endless criticism from the sort of people it’s supposedly marketed at.  I don’t think it’s fair to blame “Nerd Culture” cause it’s not really the people with nerdy underground interests doing it, it’s the same mainstream trendy crowd that ruins everything.  It just happens that “Nerdy” stuff is in vogue the last few years.
