Yo I gotta ask. Ok so yuri/yaoi are not equal which is new to me. Apparently yuri is fine though, which leads me to my question. What’s the mlm version of yuri?

superemeralds:

I’m very glad you ask, as i had not known this myself until a few weeks ago

The post got a little long so if you want in depth info just. go to the read more or check my sources. ( i bolded the ones that answers your question in one go)

TLDR;

  1. The Japanese terms for mlm/wlw media are derived from flowers and are bara ( mlm; literally means “rose”) and yuri ( wlw; literally means “lily”) respectively.
  2. Both terms are coined by the lgbt community in Japan and are used almost exclusively by gay people for gay people.
  3. Both terms are merely the names of genres for japanese gay media. These genres are primarily targeted at (young) adults and mostly have sexual topics in focus.
  4. Try to stop referring to your mlm/wlw content with either of the 3 terms if you don’t think it fits the actual genre.

Sources: 1 (I highly recommend looking at this if you want to know more about the cultural struggles of the lgbt community in japan), 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

I generally recommend to do research on things from other cultures and languages that you do not 100% understand. It’s not that hard.
