I’m very glad you ask, as i had not known this myself until a few weeks ago
The post got a little long so if you want in depth info just. go to the read more or check my sources. ( i bolded the ones that answers your question in one go)
TLDR;
- The Japanese terms for mlm/wlw media are derived from flowers and are bara ( mlm; literally means “rose”) and yuri ( wlw; literally means “lily”) respectively.
- Both terms are coined by the lgbt community in Japan and are used almost exclusively by gay people for gay people.
- Both terms are merely the names of genres for japanese gay media. These genres are primarily targeted at (young) adults and mostly have sexual topics in focus.
- Try to stop referring to your mlm/wlw content with either of the 3 terms if you don’t think it fits the actual genre.

I generally recommend to do research on things from other cultures and languages that you do not 100% understand. It’s not that hard.
