Nobody is taught visual storytelling or metaphor in school. They have it beat into their head that the text is all that matters, and also that there’s only one way to interpret the text. That’s all high school english classes are, because they’re taught by people who were taught that way. 

Read the book.

Tell me what the book means.

Oh, you didn’t have the same interpretation as my teacher’s guide? Wrong.

Then you look at film reviews, or game reviews, or comic reviews, and they at best mention the visual elements in a token manner. Usually just to praise them generally or decry them generally. They focus on the “Story” (the text) because that’s what smart people focus on. Only stupid people think about visuals. Writing is king. It’s all that matters.

That’s basically what I mean. Everything guides people away from appreciating the visual aspects and considering them beyond ‘pretty or not pretty’
