Hearing the news about Nagini in Fantastic Beasts is just… I’m kinda speechless. But not in a shocked way. My jaded soul has already shrivelled and calcified to the point where JK could say that the Womping Willow was actually trans this whole time and I would just sigh.
I’ve said it before, and it becomes more and more relevant every time she opens her mouth, but JK Rowling is the George Lucas of literature. She had a good idea once, and now she’s gonna spend the next few decades ruining her own creation by adding things and tweaking it until it’s an unrecognisable cgi hodgepodge of its former self as she desperately claims that this was her true vision all along.
And Fantastic Beasts is her Star Wars Prequels, when everyone slowly starts to realise that she’s just a hack who’s been riding off that one good idea for years.
Reader: How did you come up with [symbolism, allegory, theme, etc.]?
Normal Author: Lol I didn’t even realize I did that??? Haha that is so funny.
JKR: This was my plan from the beginning. I have been formulating symbols for 20 years. Before I even came up with my characters, I was contriving plot twists to be revealed online after, and only after, my work had been published and the story is finished. I knew from the beginning, in the 1990s, that this was a possibility and that I would be world-famous because I am a genius. Also, Hedwig is a reincarnation of Lily Potter.
First of all, what in the fuck does this tweet even mean?
Second, why on earth is this tweet promoted?
Third, why are we relying on a woman who quite literally made a race of secretive banking goblins to finally erase anti-Semitism?
Fuck jk Rowling, fuck her terrible writing and fuck her again. Harry Potter sucks anyway, read Tolkien you cowards
I’d like to defer the Tolkien rec in favor of saying: read Terry Pratchett, an author who didn’t so much dabble with social concepts of inequality and injustice as plunge headlong in with a megaphone and a taser, and was always progressively doing more to better his work and characters the more he learned and grew as a person.
He was a writer set ablaze with fury and indignation because he loved the world and knew we could do better, and wanted to help us face some hard truths about ourselves (including himself), and often did so with profound wit and humor through the medium of 41 books and then some.
There’s a reason there’s a saying among the fans, “be more Terry”. And that reason is everything Rowling is not.
Yeah, cause like, much as I like Tolkien’s books there was a WHOLE LOT of racism of the time lurking in his books. Also: sexism. Tolkien is not unproblematic. Not that you can’t enjoy books with problematic authors. But Terry Pratchett I recommend with high praise. Also: Nnedi Okorafor, NK Jemisin, VE Schwab and Neil Gaiman
