You can have chocolate without slavery. There is a World Cocoa Foundation which promotes a sustainable cocoa economy. It doesn’t just include farming practices, but also programs which benefit cocoa farmers, their families, and their communities (water filtration and education are both a part of this). Slavery is not allowed. The sustainable part refers to both the farming and the way of life.
This chocolate does cost more. But it’s worth it. I know that Purdy’s Chocolatiers (a Canadiam company) is a part of the sustainable cocoa economy and does not allow any slavery or child labour on the farms they buy from. If, during any of their visits/inspections they find evidence of slavery, they would switch suppliers. (As far as I’m aware, this has not happened)
