SBURB is/was a game with perma-death. The kind where if a character in the game dies for whatever reason the story continues regardless, until you reach a point where the story just.. ends. Game Over. The only way to achieve the best ending from that point is either to start all over from the beginning and fix your mistakes. Or, cheat. John achieves the power of the meta game. He can activate no clip codes, instantly travel to any area he pleases, and most importantly, he can REVERT STORY PROGRESS. That’s why instead of creating an actual offshoot timeline he “F1X3S” the alpha timeline via cheats. TL;DR: John Egbert is the GameGenie of SBURB.
