What Video Games Have Taught Me

I wanted to make a comic about some of the lessons that video games I’ve played have taught me. Making this was very nostalgic, and it sort of helped me remember why I love these games so much. Be kind, everyone ❤︎

so i just learned something fun, evidently Japanese Undertale fans argued for ages over whether Sans would refer to himself as “ore” or “boku” in an official translation.

for those that don’t know, the japanese language has several words for referring to yourself. watashi, watakushi, ore, boku, et cetera. “ore” and “boku” are primarily used by men, with “ore” being considered “manly, but slightly arrogant” and “boku” being “childish, but more polite”

anyway japanese fans argued about what sans would refer to himself as. then the official translation comes out. what word does sans refer to himself as?

“oira”

“oira” is a word that is almost exclusively used by “country bumpkins.” kinda like how a person from the american south is definitely going to say “y’all” at least three times in any given conversation. “oira” is like if there were a personal pronoun version of the word “y’all” in English

and japanese fans were PISSED because it made Sans seem like a hick, and didn’t calm down until they learned that Toby picked the word himself

and that’s really funny

source

oh i forgot the best part

the controversy was dubbed “The Oira Shock” by Japanese fans

also, Papyrus refers to himself as “ore-sama,” because of course he does

now that undertale’s been announced for the switch, i feel like it’s time to remind everyone again:

regardless of what you think of undertale as a game, it’s completely harmless, so don’t fucking bash others (ESPECIALLY kids) for enjoying it, ya dipstick.

Reminder of some stuff about UT that people seem to have forgotten as well:

–Queer as hell
–Nonbinary protag
–Open lesbian romance between two important and awesome characters
–Many incidental characters with “they” pronouns
–Incidental gay romance (you end a boss fight by helping two men realize they love each other hecksake!!)
–Main character who is trans or GNC (he gets the body he wants, it’s never defined what his body was before and that is BETTER honestly)
–Toby Fox attempted to make good spaces for adults and kids before the game was even popular by asking people to tag adult content “#undertail”
–Addresses the effects of abuse and made fandom seriously consider how much responsibility a hurt child holds for actions, and what it means to forgive

Like it or not, Undertale is a hell of a learning space, please let others experience that without “lololol cringe”.  Honestly please let others experience everything without “lololol cringe”, it’s 2018 not 2006.
