Even funnier thing to imagine: resurrecting Diogenes too and telling him that “Platonic” relationships means not fucking, he’d probably laugh himself back to death.
So I actually know the origin of this term because it came up when I studied Plato in my classes. Basically, in ancient Greece it was a super common practice for teachers to fuck their students. Like all the time. It was considered a way for the student to “pay” the teacher. Plato thought this was bullshit. He felt that a student could not properly learn from someone who was truly only interested in having sex with them. He didn’t fuck his students and derided those who did. Other teachers who refused to fuck their students were said to have “platonic” teaching relationships with them – so named because they were following Plato’s example. So the reason it’s called a Platonic relationship is because Plato was heavily anti-teachers-fucking-their-students and it’s one of the few things he was ever even remotely correct about.
Yeah, High Guardian Spice does not have my attention right now. The majority of staff working on it are female? That’s cool I guess, but what’s the show actually about? What are the characters like? What’s the quality of the writing or the animation?
What’s that? You don’t have anything to show us yet? Then why the fuck should I be interested?
A) an American anime streaming service commissioning a toon instead of fixing their own site and/or stop butchering the products they buy;
B) said toon being so uninspired it almost look like a generic pop culture reference based webcomic;
C) said toon being advertised using the “bad fame is still fame” strategy, further damaging all the women in the industry creating an horrible precedent;
D) people trying to defend this whole mess, not realizing we are practically witnessing the birth of 4Kids 2.0.
My own novel is “diverse” filled with queer people of color, but you should never use “diversity” as a selling-point because then it doesnt feel authentic. It feels like its there just to hook people in and not because its an intrinsic part of the world or storytelling.
Everybody in my first novel is japanese, because its anime-inspired. Many of the chracters are queer or trans [or both] because I just like writing those kinds of characters. but when I have a trailer Im going to focus on the plot, on the lore, on the artwork [IF WE CAN EVER AFFORD IT C’: ], etc.
Because when you use diversity as a selling point it feels insincere.
Give them the plot. Give them the characters. Give them the world. Give them your WORK and let them discover the “diversity” for themselves.
ATLA didnt brag about how diverse the show was– it just gave you a show inspired by all kinds of asian and Inuit culture that featured people of color, disabled characters, and well-written female heroes as a natural part of the story.
I never once went “omg atla is so progressive its got a blind girl uwu”
i went “HOOOOLY SHIT, TOPH IS BADASS.”
And that’s what you want.
If people are only interested in your show because it meets a diversity checklist, then you’ve done a poor job as a writer. : And thats not me trying to trash it, thats just my honest opinion. If you’ve done a good job then you could have every single character be a trans woman of color without needing to go “WE’RE TRANS-INCLUSIVE!!” once; and all people will care about is how much they love their favorite characters.
The “High Guardian Spice” trailer was just so bad. We learned practically nothing about what the show is actually about, or what it’s going to be like, we don’t even learn the names of any of the main characters.
Around 99% of the trailer was dedicated entirely to WHO is making the show, and not the show itself. That is a problem. This is a bad way to market a new show.
You can’t expect us to be interested in a show if you haven’t even shown us a single scrap of footage to let us know what it’s going to be like. The majority of us don’t actually care who’s working on the show, we just care about the quality of the end product.
If you don’t have any footage to show us, then it is too early to make a trailer.
